Nollywood filmmaker Zeb Ejiro isn’t a fan of how tough it is to relate to the tales being created by today’s filmmakers.
The industry veteran has developed masterpieces such as Domitilla and Sakobi the Snake Lady.
In a recent interview, he stated that films from his period, the 1990s and 2000s, were more real than what the business is creating currently.
“The stories were so normal and commonplace that everybody could connect to them, and this struck a chord with the audience.” That’s why it was so successful,” he told Inside Nollywood.
Ejiro acknowledged that production quality is certainly higher now due to greater access to more sophisticated resources, but he was disappointed with the quality of the stories. The producer requested more pieces that focus on the African experience.
“The Nollywood of today is not doing well because the young folks are so indolent,” he remarked. They do not wish to conduct study on a typical African tale that can be told to the rest of the globe.
“Instead, they take an American tale and attempt to adapt it in a very incorrect way for Nigerians to view.”
27 years after Domitilla, Ejiro has produced Domitilla: The Reboot, which recounts the narrative of sex workers ensnared in the web of a diabolical pimp.
The film grossed approximately 11 million in its first weekend, making it the largest opening weekend for any Nollywood film in 2023 thus far.
