The Delta State Ministry of Health has provided an explanation for the refund of unauthorized fees to students in state-owned colleges of nursing.

The refunded amount, totalling millions of naira, was collected from 162 nursing students. This included 152 students from the College of Nursing Asaba, spanning various academic years and classes, as well as 10 students from the College of Nursing Sapele.

Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, the Delta State Commissioner for Health, disclosed during the refund process at the College of Nursing Asaba that, following students’ complaints, a thorough investigation uncovered that certain fees were collected without proper authorization.

He further revealed that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori strongly disapproved of these illegal levies. Consequently, he mandated the immediate cessation of such fees and instructed the prompt refund to affected students.

Onojaeme emphasized that this action stemmed from the governor’s concern that parents and students should not face undue financial strain, especially amid the current economic challenges exacerbated by inflation in the country.
