A few days before President Muhammadu Buhari’s term ended, the Nigerian government responded to opponents of its endless contracting and borrowing.
Babatunde Fashola, Minister of Works and Housing, said the Muhammadu Buhari administration would award contracts by May 28 midnight.
Politics Nigeria said that the Minister announced Akure, the Ondo state capital, when inaugurating the N90 billion dualization of the 49km outdated Akure/Ado-Ekiti motorway.
He said People, are asking why we are still giving contracts with just a few days left. Should we halt this road till the next government?
A childish discourse. They forgot, for instance, that this administration finishes at midnight on May 28.
“Governance, highways, and public debts are paradoxical on this route. True tale.
The work appears simple, yet one choice has repercussions. We gave you contractors who worked with you.
I don’t mind all the stories about myself. They just advised me to work hard.
“All lies have been propagated that Fashola dislikes Ekiti and Ondo States. Really ridiculous.
I said no to asphalting and rehabilitating the road and that we would dualize and rebuild.
“We had to design first, which took time. Many were unaware, and it’s hard.
Fashola added that NNPCL will use the federal government’s tax credit scheme to fund the N90 billion project, which can only be done by borrowing or taxing.
He said Samchase Nigeria Ltd. and Kopeck Construction Company will finish the project in 24 months.
The Minister urged the 10th National Assembly to modify the procurement act, saying it slowed progress.
They’ll call you a thief if you don’t follow the National Assembly’s Procurement Act.
“That procurement legislation and its processes don’t fit Nigeria’s growth rush. I hope the 10th National Assembly revises that procurement law. Though well-intentioned, its protocols slow the nation.
They need to remember that your politicians passed a budget for us to implement. A law. Why is the government borrowing?
“The easiest thing in government is to claim that our money is N10 and our task is N10, but that implies nobody should ask for a road.
Who will pay for it if you desire development and choose infrastructure—a road, school, bridge, pipeline, or refinery? It costs.
