UCL: Real Madrid defeats Man City, the reigning champions

Manchester City’s ambitious pursuit of an extraordinary “Double Trebble” suffered a crushing blow on Wednesday night as they were ousted from the UEFA Champions League.

Despite clinching the Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup last season, Pep Guardiola’s side aimed to replicate that success in 2024. However, it was Real Madrid who dashed their hopes by securing a spot in the UCL semi-finals.

After a 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium (4-4 on aggregate), the tie was settled by a nerve-wracking penalty shootout, which Real Madrid clinched 4-3.

Real Madrid took an early lead, capitalizing on a flowing move involving Jude Bellingham and Federico Valverde, with Vinicius Junior providing a perfect cross for Rodrygo to slot home.

Despite Real Madrid’s defensive tactics to frustrate Manchester City, the home side managed to equalize in the 78th minute when Kevin De Bruyne pounced on a loose ball from Antonio Rudiger and fired it past Andriy Lunin.

With the score level at 1-1 after regulation and extra time, the match went to penalties.

Andriy Lunin emerged as Real Madrid’s hero, saving penalties from Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic, while Antonio Rudiger sealed victory with the winning spot-kick.

Manager Carlo Ancelotti made history by becoming the first to eliminate Pep Guardiola from the Champions League in three different seasons.

Real Madrid will now face Bayern Munich in the semi-finals, further bolstering their quest for a record-extending 15th Champions League title.
