UCL Group-F Fantasy Preview for the Champions League

Sep 11, 2023 | Sports

The opposite of Group E is Group F. If they can survive this group, everyone can go deep. Ligue-1 champion PSG, Serie-A top-4 AC Milan, EPL top-4 Newcastle and Bundesliga runner-up Dortmund are competing for two spots in the knockout stages while caged together (plus one possible Europa League consolation).

PSG won its only European title in 1995-96, defeating Rapid Wein 1-0. Qatar Sports Investments (owner of PSG) has tried several head coaches and bought key players like Messi and Neymar for 10 years to achieve European success. Despite dominating domestically, PSG has yet to win another UCL trophy.

In the summer of 2023, PSG lost key players such as Lionel Messi to Miami, Neymar to Al Hilal, Abdou Diallo to Al Arabi, Mauro Icardi to Galatasaray, Georginio Wijnaldum to Al Ettifaq, Leandro Parades and Renato Sanches to Roma, and Sergio Ramos to Sevilla.

It sounds like a complete rebuild, but Kilyan Mbappe’s almost-transfer saga as he enters his final year without a contract was the summer’s highlight. In summary, Mbappe stayed at PSG after the transfer window closed.

To fill the gaps, PSG signed Frankfurt forward Randal Kolo Muani for €95m at the last minute. They also signed Sporting’s young defensive midfielder Manuel Ugrate for €60.00m, Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele for €50m, Bayern’s Lucas Hernandez for €45m, and Lyon’s Bradley Barcola for the same price. PSG signed free transfers, including Inter defender Milan Skriniar, Real Madrid’s Marco Asensio, and Benfica’s Goncalo Ramos.

Paris has had a busy transfer window, but 2014-15 UCL winner Luis Enrique from Barcelona is their most important signing. Emulating Man City, patience for success over several years is expected. PSG is second in Ligue-1 behind Monaco after winning two and drawing two of four matches.
