Trump: “I won’t participate in GOP debates.”

On Sunday, former U.S. President Donald Trump said he would skip the upcoming Republican primary debates, claiming his large poll lead as evidence that Americans knew and liked him before the 2024 election.

Trump has been suggesting for months that he would boycott the debate on Wednesday night in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, arguing that it was futile to allow his Republican opponents to oppose him given his large lead in the national polls.

He led 62% of Republican respondents in a CBS survey on Sunday, with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis behind at 16%. The other primary candidates got less than 10% support.

Trump said on Truth Social, “The public understands who I am & what a successful Presidency I had.” “I will consequently not be doing the debates.”

The Trump team did not immediately react to an inquiry about whether the former president will skip the GOP debates.

New York Times claimed that Trump sat for a filmed interview with former Fox News personality Tucker Carlson that will be released online on Wednesday. It was still being determined where Carlson’s interview would be posted.

Trump’s absence from this week’s debate might mean other contenders will attack DeSantis as the main opposition to Trump. The Republican nominee will face Democratic President Joe Biden in November 2024.

DeSantis’ campaign spokesman Andrew Romeo said the governor was excited to discuss his presidential bid in Milwaukee.

Nobody deserves this nomination, even Donald Trump. Romeo remarked on X, previously Twitter, “You have to show up and earn it.”

DeSantis dropped six percentage points from July to 13% in the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll published this month. Trump had 47% of the GOP support overall. All of the other debate contestants have yet to reach double digits.

Trump has until Friday to voluntarily surrender in Fulton County, Georgia, after being accused in a fourth felony indictment last week for attempting to overturn his 2020 election defeat to Biden.
