President Bola Tinubu urged the Supreme Court to deny Atiku Abubakar’s request to present new evidence in his appeal against the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal’s ruling.
Abubakar, the PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, accused President Tinubu of academic forgeries. A US court ordered Chicago State University to release Tinubu’s educational records, which Atiku now wants to present to the Supreme Court.

President Tinubu responded that Atiku’s initial tribunal petition did not include the certificate forgery allegation, revealing his major mistake. Tinubu argued that the tribunal correctly struck out paragraphs from the petitioners’ replies that attempted to introduce new issues, such as certificate forgery, not in the main petition. He stressed that Atiku’s US court application was unrelated to the Supreme Court’s appeal or the tribunal’s record or judgement.

President Tinubu said the appeal was meritless and should be dismissed. Atiku and the PDP disputed the February 25, 2023, presidential election. Atiku failed to prove his petition’s allegations, the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal ruled on September 6. Atiku appealed to the Supreme Court on September 18, 2023, with no hearing date.
