The new Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, have received congratulations from President Bola Tinubu for being chosen to preside over the 10th National Assembly.

This came after Akpabio won the Senate by 63 votes to 46 over Senator-elect Abdulaziz Yari, the former governor of Zamfara State, to win the presidency.

Abbas received 353 votes in the House of Representatives, defeating his challengers, former Deputy Speaker Ahmed Wase and Aminu Jaji, who each received three votes. Abbas was the APC’s chosen candidate.

“Being elected by peers as presiding officers and taking the leadership of the National Assembly is a wonderful honour that comes with huge responsibility,” Tinubu said in a statement he personally signed on Tuesday.

“I have faith that you will live up to the trust that your supporters and many Nigerians have placed in you.

In my capacity as your president, I’m ready to cooperate openly with the National Assembly. Nigerians look on their distinguished senators and honourable members to pass laws and fulfil oversight responsibilities that will improve the effectiveness of the government and ultimately improve their quality of life.
