Phrank Shaibu Calls BBC’s Analysis of Bola Tinubu’s Education Credentials Biased and Unreliable.
Phrank Shaibu, the Special Assistant on Public Communication to Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, told the BBC that they had filed a complaint about a report on Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s education.

The BBC report, “Bola Tinubu diploma: No evidence Nigeria’s president forged college record,” examined President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s controversial certificate submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The report found no evidence the president forged the certificate.

Phrank Shaibu told Channels TV’s Politics Today that the BBC’s top management had examined the report, casting doubt on its veracity.

Shaibu questioned the report’s authors: “When they said a BBC report, I laughed at the pedestrianism. These three young people who wrote that report are not BBC employees. They’re like fact-checkers.”

He stated that Olaronke Alo was a reporter and presenter at TVC owned by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2019. Shaibu suggested Alo’s involvement in the report was a conflict of interest, casting doubt on its objectivity.

The report claimed the Atiku media team did not respond to inquiries, but Shaibu denied it. “The same report claims the Atiku media team did not respond to their calls. Since the BBC allowed this hatched job, we have petitioned and raised this with top management.

As the 2023 general elections approach, this dispute complicates politics and highlights the media’s role in vetting politicians. The PDP’s formal complaint against the BBC shows sensitivity to how such reports may affect elections.
