The Story of a Crypto Compliance Officer Who Got Locked Up in Nigeria

Tigran Gambaryan, a compliance official representing the cryptocurrency exchange Binance, embarked on a two-day business trip to Nigeria in February and has yet to return as planned.

Despite his intentions to swiftly conclude his business dealings, Gambaryan, a former U.S. law enforcement agent, found himself in a precarious situation. Just weeks prior to his trip, he and several colleagues hastily departed Nigeria due to concerns of potential detainment by local authorities.

Upon arriving in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, on February 26, Gambaryan and his colleague Nadeem Anjarwalla were unexpectedly taken to a guesthouse controlled by Nigerian security officials. They remained there for nearly a month without formal charges being filed against them.

In late March, Anjarwalla, who served as Binance’s regional manager for Africa, mysteriously escaped from the guesthouse. Initial reports suggested that guards allowed him to leave for Ramadan prayers.

Following Anjarwalla’s escape, the Nigerian government charged Gambaryan, Anjarwalla, and Binance with tax evasion and money laundering, implicating both employees and the company in the alleged crimes.
