President Bola Tinubu has sanctioned a comprehensive census of schools across Nigeria, spanning from primary to tertiary levels. The objective is to evaluate their conditions, living facilities, proximity to one another, and educational infrastructure, among other essential data points.

This exhaustive assessment will also entail determining the number of teachers nationwide, their qualifications, and training history, as well as the total count of pupils and students in primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions, including gender distribution and academic performance.

The initiative stems from a recognized shortage of coordinated and verifiable data crucial for effective planning within Nigeria’s education sector. Its overarching goal is to overhaul the education landscape, enhance learning outcomes, increase enrollment rates, and safeguard the academic future of Nigerian children.

In a statement signed by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, the presidency announced these system-wide policies under the acronym DOTS, encapsulating Data Repository, Out-of-School Children Education, Teacher Training and Development, and Skill Development and Acquisition.

With Nigeria harboring a significant proportion of out-of-school children globally, exacerbated by challenges like banditry and poverty, these policies aim to address such disparities and ensure equitable access to quality education for all.

To facilitate effective monitoring and intervention, a dedicated portal/dashboard will be established at various governmental levels to host and disseminate real-time data. This infrastructure will empower stakeholders to track student progress and tailor interventions, especially for vulnerable groups like out-of-school children and girls.

Efforts are also underway to enhance teachers’ digital skills, integrating technology into classrooms across all education levels. Furthermore, the implementation of the National Skills Framework is poised to diversify skill development within the education sector, equipping students with competencies relevant to the evolving global economy.

Once fully operational, these initiatives are expected to bridge existing gaps in education, elevate learning standards, and address unemployment concerns, aligning with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for Nigeria’s education sector.
