The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal has explained why it rejected a request by Labour and Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate, for the tribunal’s hearings to be televised.
Recall that Obi and his party had asked the court for permission to broadcast the court proceedings on live television as part of their lawsuit challenging Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s election victory on February 25.
On May 22, Judge Haruna Tsammani declared, “The application lacks merit and is now rejected.”
The presiding Judge emphasised that live streaming needs to be prepared for and budgeted for and cannot be done on the fly while referencing other nations.
Tsammani argued that the PEP court could only approve the application with the required framework or policies because such a request is only approved with regulations enabling it to take effect.
The five-person panel decided to dismiss the application unanimously, and the court agreed.
