Allegations of familial discord have surfaced with claims of a scathing letter penned by Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, the first child of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, directed towards her father. This purported letter emerged following her father’s critical public message to former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2013.

Reportedly, in the 11-page document titled “Open Letter to my Father,” dated December 16, 2013, the former senator vehemently accused her father of harbouring a selfish desire for power and fostering an environment where individuals of low esteem and intellect flourish.

Among the allegations levelled against the former president, Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello claimed that he pursued a third-term bid for the Nigerian presidency and exhibited cruelty towards family members, including neglecting his children and grandchildren. She also asserted that her father had a history of mistreating women.

Expressing her disillusionment with the political landscape, Iyabo vowed to refrain from any political involvement in Nigeria, adamantly denying any political motives behind her confrontation with her father. She lamented the prevailing culture where competent individuals are compelled to submit to the whims of less capable counterparts for survival.

Drawing from her personal experience as chairperson of the Senate Committee on Health, Iyabo recounted facing adversity despite diligently executing her duties, citing unjust prosecution following a budgeted retreat organized by her committee.

However, following the emergence of the letter, the former senator swiftly disclaimed authorship.

In another familial rift, former Senate President Bukola Saraki found himself at odds with his late father, Olusola Saraki, over the issue of succession in Kwara state. Bukola publicly opposed his father’s desire for his sister, Senator Gbemisola Saraki, to succeed him as governor, ultimately campaigning against his father’s wishes during the 2011 governorship election.

This opposition reportedly led to the public humiliation of his father during the electoral process, prompting Olusola Saraki to shift allegiance from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN), where Gbemisola was a gubernatorial candidate.

Meanwhile, allegations of domestic discord have also emerged from within the Obasanjo household, with Taiwo, the estranged wife of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, accusing him of being a callous husband during their marriage. Taiwo recounted instances where Obasanjo exhibited remorse, including prostrating and crying when she departed from their marital home. She criticized his penchant for criticizing other presidents, urging him to emulate his counterparts.
