Prior to the BRICS Summit on August 22 in Johannesburg, the governing African National Party (ANC) of South Africa is conducting discussions with representatives of political parties from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and other countries.
Everyone’s top thought right now is still the situation in Ukraine.
“We support putting an end to gun violence in Ukraine, achieving lasting peace, and promoting peaceful coexistence between Russia, Ukraine, and the surrounding area.” (…) Paul Mashatile, South Africa’s Deputy President and Deputy President of the ANC stated, “We are fully behind the African peace initiative led by President Cyril Ramaphosa and the seven other African heads of state and government to find a peaceful solution to the conflict, by facilitating dialogue between President Vladimir Putin and President Zelenskyy.
Russian Communist Party representatives charge that the West wants to keep the war going.
“While the USA and other Western nations, who genuinely support the Zelenskyy dictatorship, do not want peace, we do not desire a conflict. They are making every effort to scuttle talks, said Artem Prokofiev, a representative of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation.
Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, has yet to confirm whether or not he will attend the BRICS conference next month.
According to South Africa’s deputy president in an interview with a news website last week, South Africa is attempting to convince Putin to stay away to avoid the legal and diplomatic repercussions of his international arrest warrant.
