The Adamawa state administration has asked the state police command to investigate the unlawful declaration of All Progressives Congress candidate Aishatu Dahiru Binani in the April 15 supplemental gubernatorial poll.

The state government said the State’s Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice had written the Commissioner of Police to immediately begin investigations for possible prosecution of all those found guilty in the polls saga. This was stated in a statement by the chief press secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou.

Following the other election in the state on April 15, the Adamawa State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Hudu Yunusa-Ari, sneaked into the gubernatorial collation centre early on April 16 to declare Binani, the winner of the governorship contest.

On April 19, INEC Returning Officer Mohammed Melee proclaimed incumbent governor and Peoples Democratic Party candidate Ahmadu Fintiri the gubernatorial election winner.

On Thursday, the Adamawa State government’s Chief Public Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou, said that the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice Afraimu Jingi had ordered the Police to investigate and prosecute all individuals involved in the bungled “civilian coup.”

The letter said, “The State Government, in a letter to the State Police Command issued by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Afraimu Jingi, asks the Police to investigate potential criminal charges against all anyone found to be accountable for the event and their roles.

The State Government will help the state police command complete the inquiry.

Hudu’s behaviour undermined the four-year-old tranquilly the state government had created.

The statement indicates that Hudu’s proclamation of APC’s gubernatorial candidate as the winner while collation was still underway caused a state-wide disturbance.
