The Spanish custodian David De Gea joined Manchester United from Atletico Madrid in 2011, making 545 appearances for the team. In the 2022–23 season, he beat Peter Schmeichel’s club clean sheet record and earned the Premier League Golden Glove.

While negotiations continued throughout the season, the 32-year-contract old’s with United terminated at the end of June without a new agreement.

De Gea sent a message on social media saying, “I simply wanted to offer this parting greeting to all Manchester United fans.”

“I want to say how grateful and appreciative I am for your love over the last 12 years.

“Since my darling Sir Alex Ferguson introduced me to this club, we’ve accomplished much. Every time I put this jersey on, I felt a tremendous sense of pride because I knew how blessed I was to be the team’s captain and represent the largest club in the world.

“It is the ideal moment to take on a fresh task and push myself once again in unfamiliar circumstances.”
