Sanusi Mohammed, the 14th Emir of Kano, met with Niger’s coup leaders two weeks ago.

On Wednesday, the former Central Bank of Nigeria governor briefed President Bola Tinubu on his mediation efforts to resolve the political issue in the neighbouring nation.

When ECOWAS, African Union, and a senior American ambassador failed, he met with Niger coup leaders.

Sanusi believes Nigerians and Nigeriens must work with the government to solve the Niger dilemma.

“I came to update him on my conversations with Niger leaders,” he added. We’ll keep trying to bridge the divide.

“Public diplomacy is the time, not governments. To discover a solution that works for Africa, Niger, Nigeria, and mankind, all Nigerians and Nigeriens must participate.

He said he initiated the peace move using his connections and will continue to lead.

I’m not government-sent. I used my connections to get there, but government authorities were aware. I’ll keep trying. “As a leader, I must,” Sanusi remarked.

On Thursday, ECOWAS leaders will discuss Niger’s military authorities’ refusal to resign or risk military action.

“ECOWAS heads of state (will) conduct another emergency meeting on the political crisis in the Republic of Niger,” the 15-member bloc announced in its first formal response after Niger missed Sunday’s deadline to reinstall democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum.

Nigeria’s President, ECOWAS chairman, will host the summit in Abuja.
