The pictures and identities of three cops who attacked a driver in Rivers State, South-South Nigeria, have been released by the police.
The officers are Adejoh Siaka and Friday Obaka, both inspectors, and Ndiwa Kpuebari, a sergeant.
Muyiwa Adejobi, the Force Headquarters spokesperson, revealed this in a Twitter message on Tuesday evening and posted a photo of the three officers on his Twitter page.
“They are the men that smacked a man in Rivers.” Today, they reported to Force Headquarters. The trial will begin soon. “We will keep you updated as soon as possible,” Mr Adejobi stated on the social networking platform.
The officers were arrested on Monday, and the force spokeswoman notified Nigerians through Twitter that they would be transported to the Force Headquarters in Abuja the next day (Tuesday) for “additional steps.”
In the video, which has gone viral on Twitter, Facebook, and WhatsApp, one of the cops is seen slapping the motorist after thrashing him with a cane.
Another police was also seen forcing a lady, who was later identified as the man’s wife, into a vehicle.
Mr Adejobi described the cops’ actions as “barbaric” and “does not paint the police in a favorable light at all.”
“I’m not sure how a man, a decent man, would flog or smack a grown-up man in that fashion,” the representative continued.
Okon Effiong, the Commissioner of Police of Rivers State, had earlier ordered the officers’ detention and threatened to penalize them for their actions.
The Rivers incident happened just a few days after a police officer allegedly shot dead a young man in neighboring Delta State for allegedly refusing to pay a bribe of N100.
PREMIUM TIMES reported that Delta State youths marched carrying the victim’s body along key highways in Asaba.
Onyeka Ibe, the victim, was shot while inside a vehicle with his wife.
The cop accused of shooting the man had been apprehended and imprisoned.
