Paris, France, April 27, 2023—African Media Agency (AMA) The top 45 startups long-listed for the second AfricaTech Awards, a pan-African effort honouring firms promoting innovation and growth, were revealed today by Viva Technologies and the IFC.
Knowledge partner Deloitte picked the businesses from more than 380 applications, up 30% from 2022. Climate Tech (124) trailed Finance (143) in applications (115). Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt, Tunisia, and South Africa have the highest participation percentages among the 33 African nations. 91% of applicants had a female board member this year.
“We are pleased that the AfricaTech Awards are drawing attention to the special vibrancy of the African innovation sector to the world at a time when entrepreneurs need support more than ever. According to Maurice Lévy, Pierre Louette, and François Bitouzet, co-presidents of Viva Technologies, the AfricaTech Awards were developed to help these 45 companies reach their full potential.
The 2023 AfricaTech Awards from IFC seek to strengthen ICT ecosystems in developing nations and expand innovative businesses. A $225 million venture funding platform was developed by IFC for digital entrepreneurs in Pakistan, the Middle East, Africa, and Central Asia. In order to assist seed funds, incubators, and accelerators in financing and mentoring early-stage businesses for later-stage investment, the IFC Startup Catalyst Programme has been increased by $60 million.
Tech firms boost economic growth and scale innovative development solutions in emerging nations. Makhtar Diop, IFC’s Managing Director, said many foreign investors overlook them. Tech entrepreneurs in emerging countries may connect with investors, mentors, and partners through the AfricaTech Awards. Thus, IFC strongly supports this initiative.”
A jury of industry experts will choose the best three companies in each category at Viva Technology 2023 in Paris, June 14–17. Viva Technology’s main stage will unveil AfricaTech Award winners.
