Benue State has decided to dedicate a 9.7-kilometre road in his honour of the late military officer Gideon Orkar, who was hanged for a botched coup.
This information was provided to journalists at a briefing by the state’s commissioner for information, culture, and tourism, Mike Inalegwu, on Tuesday following the state executives’ meeting at the Government House in Makurdi.
On April 22, 1990, Nigerian military commander Orkar overthrew General Ibrahim Babangida’s administration. Orkar and his other conspirators were put on trial, found guilty of treason, and executed.
Inalegwu added that after handing authority over to Governor-elect Hyacinth Alia, Samuel Ortom would remain in the state for six months.
He hinted that the state’s Contributory Pension Fund had reached N6 billion and that fund administrators would be appointed so that the new administration could access the funds and use them appropriately.
The commissioner also denounced the ongoing murders of rural residents by armed intruders and denounced the most recent massacre of six persons, including a man, his wife, and their three-month-old child, in the Adaka community of Makurdi LGA.
