Sule Adeola, 70, has been ordered to be detained at the Nigerian Correctional Center in Ado Ekiti after being accused of raping a 10-year-old girl by an Ekiti State Chief Magistrate’s Court.
The indictment states that the defendant “is reasonably suspected to have committed an offence of rape on a 10-year-old kid severally between March and June 2023 inside Ado Ekiti Magisterial District.”
“The offence is punishable under Section 31(2) of the Child Right Law of Ekiti State,” police prosecutor Inspector Olubu Apata stated.
The victim added in her testimony to the police, “My mother is late while my father lives in Abeokuta. In Ekiti, I reside with my grandmother. The defendant, Baba Sule, lives next door.
“Baba Sule would summon me to his chamber, have me remove my pants and place his something (penis) in my vagina whenever my grandmother sent me on a mission. Each time he did it, I felt pain. He threatened to beat me to death if I told anyone, and he always cautioned me not to,” the woman said.
The police prosecutor requested that the court review the attached documents and order the defendant’s 30-day detention pending the delivery of legal counsel from the Director of Public Prosecution.
The defendant is now ordered to be held at the Correctional Centre, Ado Ekiti, pending the release of the legal advice by the Director of Public Prosecution, according to Chief Magistrate Kehinde Awosika, who stated that there was probable cause to remand the 70-year-old.
The case was postponed by the chief magistrate to July 10, 2023, for mention.
