NSCDC officer, NYSC member brawl over food

Jun 19, 2023 | Security | 0 comments

An NSCDC officer and a NYSC member fought over food at an Abuja event yesterday.

The FCTA Department of Parks and Recreation hosted the 2023 International Day to Fight Desertification and Drought and the yearly tree planting programme.

Our reporter says that the confrontation would have escalated if not for the rapid involvement of other guests, including journalists who were still at the party. The other corps members were ready to help their colleagues in attacking the NSCDC officer.

The Department’s office in Asokoro, a military-protected location, was filled with visitors, many of whom left angry because personnel hoarded food and beverages.

A male youth corps member fought a uniformed NSCDC official who tried to take a bag of food and beverages from him.

The corps member, who requested anonymity, claimed he attempted to explain to the officer that the food packs were for his colleagues who were formally invited to the event, but he refused.

“One of the workers asked me to take food, so I noticed the bag and took it, then three Civil Defence Officers arrived and stole it. I inquired why they were yanking the bag from me as I was told it was for NYSC members.

“Before I understood what was occurring, one of the NSCDC officials warned me to be cautious, and I responded, ‘Is it because of food that you are pointing at me ordering me to take time?’

“I encouraged him to take time, and he insisted he would defeat me, but I told him he couldn’t. He struck me before I understood what was happening, so we fought.”

“It is inappropriate for this young guy, who considers himself an NYSC member, to be carrying food with one of our soldiers,” stated a civil defence officer. Not the food, but how he was battling a uniformed person. I’m upset with our guys who watched instead of manhandling the guy.”
