President Muhammadu Buhari (L) meets ex-governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu (R)
President Muhammadu Buhari believes that democracy has a bright future in Nigeria.
Responding to reporters’ queries during Friday’s Eid-el-Fitr prayers in Abuja, President Buhari said his conviction was founded on Nigerians’ willingness to preserve democracy against all dangers.
“Nigerians value democracy’s stability.
“The outcome of the 2023 elections, in which more than ten governors failed to make it to the Senate, gave a statement that Nigerians understand the power of their votes and how to utilise them.”
“Nigerians value democracy.” They have demonstrated their affection for it and will protect it against actual or perceived dangers.
“People will continue to vote one way or the other based on their choices,” President Buhari remarked.
He pledged that the May 29 transition date to a new administration will be kept.
“God willing, nothing will stand in the way of the transfer,” he said.
Regarding his plans after leaving office, the president expressed gratitude to God for allowing him to serve two four-year terms and expressed hope for a smooth transition.
“I appreciate God for everything He has done for me personally and for what He has enabled us to accomplish.”
“I am looking forward to going to my village; to be as far away from Abuja as possible so that the next president would have the time and space to make choices without my interrupting him.”
