The Northwest Progressives Forum supports former Zamfara State Governor Abdulaziz Yari for Senate President of the 10th Senate.
The organisation warned President-elect Asiwaju Bola Tinubu not to let politicians from other geopolitical zones attack him for the Senate presidency.
At a press conference in Kaduna on Saturday, group convener Nasir Dambatta said the Senate President should go to the Northwest zone, which gave the All Progressives Congress the most votes in the last presidential election.
“Our candidate is Abdulaziz Yari, a former Zamfara State governor and ex-Nigerian Governors Forum chairman,” he stated.
He believes giving the 10th Senate Presidency to the Northwest is fair and proper, which delivered the President-elect more than 30% of votes in the past election.
“The guy that is eminently competent for the position is former Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari,” Dambatta said.
He continued, “We are aware of regionalist political players’ many movements and counter-manoeuvres aiming to replace their respective zones at an advantage when it is not warranted.
“Official election results reveal that the Northwest provided the most votes for Tinubu, making it the logical and rightful claimant to the number three position.
“While we do not expect President-elect Tinubu and the APC to give any zone, including the Northwest, what it does not deserve, it would only be fair to reward the people who struggled for and earned it.
“The rule of fairness, justice, and basic decency mandates that the Northwest, and not any other zone, ought to be rewarded for its dedication to the APC and the Asiwaju values, which it thoroughly showed during the polls.
Thus, we urge the APC and the president-elect to zone the Senate President position to the region that gave him more than 30% of his winning votes.
“We feel bound, after considering so many variables, to advise that when finally the seat is micro-zoned to the Northwest, former Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari, is eminently competent for the job,” he stated.
“At the risk of overstating the problem, we are certain that only Yari possesses the proven integrity, honesty, and expertise essential for such a position.”
