Prof. Alewo John-Akubo, a university dean, has asked the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to immediately ramp up operations in order to address concerns with suspected result manipulation by students.
John-Akubo responded to the recent scandal in which Mmesoma Ejikeme, a student from the Anambra State, was accused by JAMB of manipulating her results in order to get national recognition by saying, “Nip the evil in the bud before it impacts Nigeria’s educational standard.”
The Varsity Don criticised the pace at which certain students are faking test results in the nation, warning that if nothing is done to control the matter, it would signal death for Nigeria’s educational system.
According to Naija News, this was what John-Akubo said to some journalists on Monday in Lokoja in response to the controversy surrounding Ejikeme’s JAMB results.
Fabian Benjamin, the JAMB spokesperson, denied earlier on Sunday that Miss Mmesoma Ejikeme had received the best mark in this year’s JAMB test.
He asserts that Ejikeme’s initial score was 249 rather than the commonly reported 362 points.
Prof. John-Akubo, the current vice chancellor of Salem University Lokoja, commented on the situation, saying all hands must be on deck to stop candidates in Nigeria from faking results.
“This event about the results of the just-completed JAMB does not bode well for the examination body or Nigeria as a whole. The Don was reported by the Daily Post as stating, “I’m utilising this means to call on the board to take up and nip the evil in the bud before it undermines Nigeria’s educational quality.
Further describing the incident as a cankerworm that must not be allowed to undermine Nigeria’s educational system, The Varsity Don emphasised that higher institutions should look beyond what they hope to gain from potential students and instead conduct a thorough investigation to uncover any person planning to enter higher education through questionable and suspicious means.
