Chinedu Ani, commonly known as OAP Nedu, a popular Nigerian on-air personality and comedian, has apologized for his recent statement regarding marriage.

This is a response to the recent controversy involving Moroccan player Achraf Hakimi, whose wife, Hiba Abouk, allegedly filed for divorce and wanted half of his property but received nothing since his assets were in his mother’s name.

Nedu had posted on his social media profile that “marriage is gone.”

“I don’t know if una don watch that video or the message or the photographs of that PSG footballer wey dey call Hakimi wey e be claim him be 24-year-old and his wife dey want for divorce,” he remarked. Then when she asks for a divorce, she says she wants half of what the guy is worth.

“You see how they say marriage dies?” In reality, if people believe anything for marriage before, the thing that is going on today with marriage for the entire globe, people do not want to enter marriage again. “Na most women, some of una, na e dey make some people not want to enter marriage because una don transform the matter into a poverty relief program.”

This speech drew fury and condemnation from his fans and followers, many of whom perceived it as a denigration of the institution of marriage.

After the outrage, Nedu has apologized on his social media account. In a statement, he said, “Sincere apologies to anybody harmed by my Hakimi video.” It’s completely taken out of context. In any case, please accept my apologies. I get paid, therefore whatever doesn’t sit well with you won’t be entertained. God bless Una. “Love and light.”
