Ministerial Positions: Arewa Economic Forum Calls on Tinubu to Give Veteran Politicians the Back Seat
The Arewa Economic Forum (AEC) has encouraged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to give preference to qualifications and experience when appointing ministers, advisors, and agency heads rather than seasoned politicians and incumbents of political office.
The conference made the point that the President may make sure that the best people are given the duty of serving the country by putting meritocracy at the centre of decision-making.
During a media event in Abuja, Ibrahim Yahaya Dandakata, the chairman of the AEC, suggested that the President refrain from appointing individuals whose only qualifications are political engagement or who have performed poorly in prior jobs they have had.
While he praised Tinubu for the recent appointments of the National Security Advisor, Service Chiefs, and others that are in keeping with the notion of federal character and characterised by competency and track record, he recommended the same for future appointments on merit.
A vital first step towards successful leadership and governance, according to Dandakata, is the nomination of people who have the required expertise, track record of probity, diligence, and competencies. Nigeria is at a crossroads, and the nation’s leadership must be inspired by these traits rather than political favour and expediency.
“Nigeria has been plagued by economic, social, and political concerns, which have in turn led to problems of national concern including a high unemployment rate, historically high inflation, and a lack of unity among the populace, which has given rise to insecurity in certain areas of the nation.
The President has a proven track record of pristine honesty. He was primarily elected because of his success as a public administrator and businessman. His undisputed status as one of Nigeria’s most scrutinised politicians—having been examined by multiple anti-corruption authorities and determined to be infallible—is evidence of his dedication to openness and accountability.
As a result, we asked the President to keep up this legacy and convey a favourable view of his government and the nation. We urge the President to put competence, track record, and merit above all other factors when making further nominations, including those for ministries and other posts.
According to Dankata, the Arewa Economic Forum is still dedicated to assisting projects that advance responsible leadership, public accountability, and the well-being of Nigerians. We are prepared to support the administration as it works to create an inclusive and prosperous Nigeria.
Academics, business owners, industrialists, lawyers, youth leaders, and former security and public service employees were among the participants at the Arewa Economic Conference.
