“Successful performances in which she brings life to wonderfully multifaceted female characters” earned the 73-year-old the medal.
“The honesty and responsibility she brings to her choice of characters, at the service of inspirational and outstanding storytelling, extend out beyond the screen,” it said.
Streep has played everything from a Nazi concentration camp victim to an ABBA-singing mother.
“The Iron Lady” earned her her most recent Oscar.
She won “Kramer vs. Kramer” in 1980 and “Sophie’s Choice” in 1983.
The organisation established after Spanish Crown Princess Leonor awards eight prizes yearly in the arts, sciences, and other fields, including the 50,000-euro ($55,000) award.
Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Michael Haneke, and Frank Gehry have won the arts prize.
In October, King Felipe VI of Spain will present the prizes live on Spanish television.
