Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Labour Party, held a massive rally on Monday in support of the party before the Edo State local government elections on September 2.

According to Obi, the local government area system is “where development, especially of the grassroots, is domiciled,” as he said in his address to the throngs of party members who had flocked out for the occasion.

“Local government is the closest to the people and is meant to be the foundation for guaranteeing the people’s progress.

“The local government is responsible for the three most important development sectors: health, education, and poverty eradication.

So, the local government is crucial for the system to function and for a nation to grow successfully since everything related to development is housed there.

“As a result, it is essential to our growth and sustainability. As governor, I spent over six years unable to hold local government elections due to legal disputes.

In order to assist our candidates in the next local government election in Edo, we are here today. We would do everything to help them, he added.

Nonetheless, Obi instructed people in the state to cast their ballots for party candidates in large numbers, promising them that their future would be secured by doing so.

Earlier, Mr. Julius Abure, National Chairman of the Labour Party, praised Gov. Godwin Obaseki for putting the necessary procedures in place for the conduct of the election but cautioned that the vote must be free and fair.

According to Abure, the public must support our candidates in the next local government election because we have the best candidates to run Nigeria’s local government system.

Mr. Olumide Akpata, a candidate for governor in the Edo election of 2024, also spoke and asked the public to cast their votes for all LP candidates.

According to Akpata, the immediate past president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the nominees were people of perfect integrity who could carry out the LP’s programmes.
