World champion N’Golo Kante is set to make a surprising return to international football, as France coach Didier Deschamps announced on Thursday. Deschamps revealed the 25 players selected for the French squad at Euro 2024.

Kante, who left the English side of Chelsea last summer to join the Saudi club Al Ittihad, has yet to represent France since June 2022. Despite concerns about his fitness due to injuries during his time at Chelsea, Deschamps emphasized that Kante had a full season in Saudi Arabia and is now fully fit. Deschamps believes that Kante’s experience will significantly bolster the French team.

The 33-year-old midfielder’s inclusion in Deschamps’ squad was the biggest surprise. However, his presence is expected to provide valuable support to young talents like Warren Zaire-Emery and Bradley Barcola, both of whom had impressive seasons at Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Winger Barcola, aged 21, earned his spot in the squad after delivering standout performances in the Champions League knock-out stages against Real Sociedad and Barcelona, despite being uncapped at the international level.

Additionally, Real Madrid defender Ferland Mendy returns to the national team after a hiatus since September 2022. Mendy, who has been a regular starter for Real Madrid this season, adds depth to the defensive line.

Star forward Kylian Mbappe headlines the squad alongside Antoine Griezmann, Olivier Giroud, and Arsenal defender William Saliba. Mbappe, in exceptional form, heads into the tournament after an impressive season despite speculation about his club’s future.

Young talent Warren Zaire-Emery, who enjoyed a breakthrough season at PSG, expressed his excitement about representing France in the Euros and revealed that he was granted permission to delay his final school exams to focus on football during the tournament.

Despite injury concerns, Aurelien Tchouameni, Mike Maignan, and Kingsley Coman were also named in the squad. However, PSG’s Lucas Hernandez misses out due to a knee injury.

France, among the favorites to win the tournament, will kick off their Euro campaign against Austria on June 17 in Germany, followed by matches against the Netherlands and Poland in the group stage.

The French squad for Euro 2024 includes:

Goalkeepers: Alphonse Areola (West Ham/ENG), Mike Maignan (AC Milan/ITA), Brice Samba (Lens)
