Is Meghan Markle considering a future in politics after visiting Nigeria on an unofficial “royal tour”?

Meghan Markle, a staunch advocate for women’s rights who believes in their power to change the world, is reportedly contemplating a future in politics. This speculation follows her recent unofficial “royal tour” to her adopted “homeland” of Nigeria with Prince Harry.

According to Sky News, royal expert Richard Kay suggested that the couple’s visit to Nigeria could be seen as a “soft launch” for Meghan’s potential US presidential campaign.

Supporters of the Duchess of Sussex, including her former Suits co-star Erika Alexander, are confident in her political aspirations. Alexander recently stated that Meghan is “heading to the White House.”

Since Meghan and Harry stepped back from their royal duties in 2020, there has been ongoing speculation about her political ambitions, though she has not publicly addressed these rumors.

During their three-day tour in Nigeria, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex promoted the Invictus Games and met with high-ranking officials. This visit has fueled further speculation about Meghan’s political intentions.

Meghan has a history of engaging in political causes, a move often criticized by working royals who are expected to remain politically neutral. In 2021, she lobbied members of the United States Senate for paid leave, using her title “the Duchess” despite the US not recognizing such titles.

Meghan could be positioning herself for a future in US politics. MailOnline noted that she might follow a path similar to Donald Trump’s, transitioning from celebrity to politician.

If Meghan seriously pursues a political career, particularly a bid for the White House, Prince Harry would likely need to become an American citizen to maintain her credibility. US politics specialist Christopher Phelps remarked, “It would be a great story: the British prince who loved her so much he gave up his British citizenship to become an American.”

There were rumors last year that California Governor Gavin Newsom might appoint Meghan as a Senator following Dianne Feinstein’s death. Meghan reportedly met with Newsom and networked with prominent Democrats to establish a grassroots campaign. However, Newsom ultimately appointed Laphonza Butler.
