On Thursday in Lagos, INEC addressed several administrative issues related to the 2023 general elections.
During the 2023 general election post-poll review with administrative secretaries, INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu said this.
Yakubu said the administrative secretaries met to identify some of INEC’s organizational problems from the previous general election.
The chairman added that Nigerians rated the commission based on the performance of their state administrative secretaries.
He stated that the committee acknowledged several administrative secretaries’ hard work.
Yakubu said several sectors needed rededication, commitment, reform, and, if necessary, punishment for erring INEC staff.
This conference will identify strengths to consolidate.
“The discussion with administrative authorities was to identify weaknesses and provide concrete suggestions for future elections.
So, the commission has recognized these difficulties and how to address them for future elections based on public comments.
“Among them were late delivery of election materials to certain polling places, ineffective service by trained officials, administration of the BVAS technology, and insecurity of facilities and personnel,” he added.
Yakubu said state administrative authorities must organize their logistics to collect votes nationwide on time.
He said the panel wants to discover what prevented the complete execution of these agreements.
“Does INEC have the trucks and buses for road and sea transit during election?” he asked.
The chairman added that Nigerians complained that they seldom anticipated timely service from well-trained commission workers or ad hoc staff at polling units.
Yakubu said the panel wants to know how administrative secretaries managed new technology during elections.
The chairman said the commission wanted to know their field expertise in facility and staff security and how INEC could improve.
He advised state administrative secretaries to address concerns openly.
Yakubu said it was the only way to fix field issues from the previous general election.
