I rejected the Super Eagles star’s return. Ismael, the Watford manager

The summer transfer window saw Emmanuel Dennis linked with a return to Watford FC, but the deal fell through.
Watford manager Valerien Ismael told Soccernet.ng that he declined to re-sign Nigerian forward Emmanuel Dennis this summer.

The 2023 summer break saw Nottingham Forest restructure, with Dennis listed as a player for sale.

Despite rumours of Dennis returning to Vicarage Road, Ismael declined to bring the Nigerian back.

Like Taiwo Awoniyi, the Super Eagles forward joined Nottingham Forest in the 2022 summer transfer window.

With only two goals in 19 domestic matches, he was disappointed.

This poor performance was one of the main reasons Ismael didn’t bring the 25-year-old forward back to Watford.

Watford Observer reported his straightforward response: “His name came to my desk, but I said no.”

Ismael also considered other transfer options, including Cho Gue-sung, who joined Midtjylland.

“We had a number of No.9 players, and we were working on them simultaneously,” Ismael said.

“You have a list of names and decide which ones work and which don’t.

Agents sometimes dropped Watford’s name, inflating the market. We must eventually stop and be firm with our valuation. No auction for us,” he said.

Player signings are not solely based on finances, Ismael said.

“The right player who fits our philosophy and mentality is also important. It’s not just money, he said.

Dennis signed a season-long loan with Istanbul Basaksehir but has yet to score in his first four games.
