All members of the opposition parties, including those elected on the platforms of the PDP, Labour Party, and NPP, supported President Bola Tinubu’s and the APC’s chosen nominee for Speaker of the House of Representatives in the 10th National Assembly.

After winning the election on Tuesday, Tajudeen Abbas, a candidate for the ruling APC, was elected Speaker of the 10th House.

In order to defeat his rivals and win the seat, Abbas received the support of every representative from the seven opposition parties that make up the House’s minority caucus.

The opposition party has more representatives in the House overall than the governing party.

In their battle with Abbas, the departing Deputy Speakers Ahmed Wase and Sani Jaji only managed to get six votes, three of which were from APC members.

Despite what appeared to be animosity between the ruling party and the opposition, newsmen learned that every Labour Party, PDP, and NNPP member supported Tinubu and the APC’s nominated candidate.

As the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja, the Labour Party, the PDP, and their presidential candidates, Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, are contesting Tinubu’s victory in the 2023 election.

Other opposition parties in the 10th House include the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Social Democratic Party, African Democratic Congress, and Youth Progressive Party, in addition to the PDP, LP, and NNPP.

The elected candidate of the governing APC and President Tinubu for Speaker received the support of all 117 PDP members in the House, 35 LP members, 19 NNPP members, and five APGA members.

Abbas was also supported by the two SDP members, two ADC members, and one YPP member.

Only six of the 178 APC members in the House abstained from voting for Abbas, including his two rivals, Wase and Jaji, who cast their own votes.

As a result, Abbas received 353 of the 359 votes cast in favour of becoming the Speaker.

Some PDP and Labour Party members in the Senate also supported Godswill Akpabio, the APC’s and Tinubu’s choice for Senate President.

After defeating Senator Abdulaziz Yari, former Akwa Ibom governor Akpabio was elected as the 10th President of the Senate.

Former senator and minority leader Akpabio defeated former Zamfara governor Yari with 63 votes to 46.
