House of Representatives to look into claims of discrimination by Chinese retailer

The House of Representatives has voiced deep concerns regarding recent reports of discrimination against Nigerians at a supermarket in Abuja operated by Chinese nationals. The House Committee on China/Nigeria Parliamentary Friendship Group, responsible for fostering positive relations between Nigeria and China, affirmed its commitment to investigating the matter and ensuring appropriate redress.

In a joint statement signed by the chairman of the House Committee on China/Nigeria Parliamentary Friendship Group, Jaafaru Yakubu, and House spokesman/chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Akin Rotimi Jr., the lawmakers emphasized the importance of mutual respect and cooperation between nations. They condemned any form of discrimination or prejudice, stating that such practices contradict the principles of friendship and cooperation established between Nigeria and China over the years.

Highlighting the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and China, which is characterized by mutual respect and cooperation, lawmakers noted the significant collaborations in various sectors, including infrastructure development, trade, education, and healthcare. They acknowledged the positive impact of socio-cultural exchanges and scholarships provided by the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, fostering mutual understanding between the two nations.

In response to the allegations, the Committee, in collaboration with other relevant committees in the House of Representatives, pledged to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter. They assured the public of their commitment to gathering all pertinent information and ensuring appropriate redress. Additionally, they urged all parties involved to approach the issue with sensitivity and openness, seeking peaceful and constructive resolutions.
