Gunmen have kidnapped Gloria Izonfuo, the Bayelsa Federal Commissioner of the National Population Commission.
According to Rivers State police spokeswoman Grace Iringe-Koko, who confirmed the kidnapping on Monday, Mrs. Izonfuo was taken on Sunday near the Ogbakiri Junction on the East-West Road along with her driver and maid.
After visiting Brass in Bayelsa State, the group was on their way back to Port Harcourt when they were kidnapped.
Police tactical teams had been sent, said Ms. Iringe-Koko, a superintendent of police, to assure the commissioner and her assistants’ safety.
Formerly, Mrs. Izonfuo oversaw the Bayelsa civil service.
The kidnappers are seeking a ransom of N500 million.
Throughout the previous two weeks, Ms. Izonfuo had been at the centre of pre-census operations in Bayelsa.
