President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, has sent a mission to the Niger Republic with instructions to settle the nation’s present political deadlock swiftly.

The move was in accordance with the decision made at the conclusion of the ECOWAS emergency summit, which took place last weekend in Abuja.

After receiving a briefing from President Tinubu at the State House in Abuja, the team, led by former Nigerian Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar (Rtd), departed for Niamey on Thursday.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, and the President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Omar Alieu Touray, are included in the delegation with the former head of state of Nigeria.

The President has also sent a different group, headed by Ambassador Babagana Kingibe, to discuss the Niger problem with the leaders of Libya and Algeria.

President Tinubu briefed the two teams and urged them to engage all parties vigorously in order to guarantee a successful and peaceful settlement of the Niger problem for the sake of African peace and prosperity rather than a drive to adopt the geopolitical views of other countries.

“We don’t want to keep anybody waiting. Democracy and regional peace are our top priorities, the President said.

General Abdulsalami Abubakar (Rtd) stated the team would visit the coup leaders in Niger to submit the requests of the ECOWAS leadership in a statement after the meeting.

The two mission commanders expressed hope about how well the assignments would turn out.
