On May 31, 2023, before Judge Darius Khobo of the Kaduna State High Court, sitting in Kaduna, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Kaduna Zonal Command successfully obtained Joseph Victor Ndubuka’s conviction on a one-count amended charge touching on impersonation.
Along with another person, Victor was detained by military personnel on suspicion of taking part in internet fraud activities. He was then turned over to the EFCC for additional investigation.
The results of the investigation showed that he had a Telegram account where he pretended to be a white gay man in order to trick his victims into romantic connections so he could then rob them. He received N1,000,000.00 in benefits.
“That you, Joseph Victor Ndubuka (aka Joonk), sometime in March 2023 in Kaduna within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court committed an offence to wit: falsely presented yourself as Joonak (a citizen of the United States of America), which pretence you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 142(1) of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017,” reads the one count amended charge.
As the charge was read to the defendant, he immediately entered a guilty plea.
Joseph was found guilty by Judge Darius and given a two-year term, with the possibility of a N200,000 fine (two hundred thousand naira).
Also, he must give the Federal Government of Nigeria one Redmi Note 10 phone and one iPhone 14 Pro Max.
