To mitigate the effect of subsidy cuts on rural Lagosians, the Federal Government has begun installing solar systems.
The Rural Electrification Agency built solar systems in schools and public health institutions in Makoko, Yaba (REA).
Ahmad Salihijo Ahmad, Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), made this statement yesterday while touring Makoko schools and hospitals where the Solar Household System (SHS) had been installed.
Engr Ahmed said the deployment was a FG National Poverty Reduction and Growth Plan initiative.

He said the organisation used to supply energy to unserved and underserved regions, but today it provides social services to address the community’s environmental and economic issues.
He visited Osogbo, Osun, and Ijebu-Ode in Ogun states as part of a South West tour.
“Even in the immediate aftermath, a decentralised approach to electrifying villages like Makoko is the proper strategy given the difficulties of managing a standard grid system.
“We are providing rural people free solar electricity as part of the continuing efforts to relieve the effect of fuel subsidy reduction on less fortunate Nigerians,” he stated.
