Igbo people are now reportedly living in dread in Lagos as a result of the general elections, according to Dr. Uma Eleazu, the chairman of the board of trustees of the premier Igbo non-partisan organisation Anya Ndi Igbo.
When Eleazu made a courtesy call to Chief Bode George, the former deputy national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in his office in Ikoyi, Lagos, he voiced the concern of the Igbo people residing in Lagos and around the nation.
He said that Igbo are primarily in Lagos to earn a livelihood and added that they now live in terror as a result of the threats and intimidation made against them before and after the general election.
He claims that Igbo elders and organisations have taken it upon themselves to ask Yoruba leaders to speak to their people about not viewing Igbos as foes.
The previous election ended up being a life-or-death situation. If you conduct a content study of the recently held elections, you will find the language employed alarming. These are the kinds of phrases that instill terror in individuals, and it went further during the most recent election.
“We witnessed the bringing out of one ethnic nationality to be agitated and called names in an effort to discourage people from voting. In an effort to denigrate and discourage people from voting, this was done in a way that had nothing to do with politics.
In response, George expressed amazement that Bola Tinubu, the president-elect, had not censured Bayo Onanuga, his former campaign spokeswoman, for his anti-Igbo remarks during the general election.
He asserted that all decent Nigerians should denounce Onanuga’s behaviour.
