The Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Hon. Muhammad Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, said lawmakers recently approved a resolution asking the executive to take aggressive measures to combat flooding in the state after the Nigerian Metrological Agency (NiMET) warned of excessive rainfall this year.
Sarkindaji, who represented state Governor Muhammad Umar Bago, said this during a condolence visit to Rafin-Gora village in Kontagora Local Government Area after a severe rain.
He indicated that NIMET predicted significant flooding after the state’s rains, necessitating government action.
The Bago donated N3 million to victims and advised against constructing streams to prevent floods.
The governor remarked, “No amount of money will bring back the lost lives.” I encourage everyone to accept the terrible occurrence as God’s will”.
Alh. Usman Mohammed, District Head of Rafin Gora, thanked the governor for his visit and promised to use the funds wisely.
On Wednesday night, strong rainstorms damaged over 100 residences and buildings worth millions of naira in Rafin Gora and adjacent villages.
