Experts warn the general public against using paper straws because they cause cancer

A recent research found that drinking using a paper straw can be bad for one’s health.

According to European studies, paper straws are associated with cancer, thyroid, and liver problems because they contain “forever chemicals” that may take a long time to break down.

90% of the paper types tested by researchers from 39 different straw brands included chemicals known as poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

They were found in most of the analysed straws, with paper and bamboo straws making up the majority of instances. The only ones devoid of PFAS were staples made of stainless steel.

The experts believe that PFAS substances may be harmful to humans, animals, and the environment.

They last for tens of thousands of years and deteriorate gradually. They have a number of health problems related to them, such as a diminished reaction to vaccines, low birth weight, thyroid disease, high cholesterol, liver damage, kidney cancer, and testicular cancer.

According to experts, paper straws are very harmful to human health and may even cause cancer.

They make everyday items like non-stick cookware and outdoor clothing stain, heat, and water-resistant.

“Straws made of plant-based materials, including paper and bamboo, are often advertised as being more sustainable and environmentally benign than those made of plastic, says the University of Antwerp’s Dr. Thimo Groffen, an environmental scientist.

Given that these straws contain PFAS, “that’s not necessarily accurate,” however.
