On Saturday, high-profile Nigerians, including the immediate-past Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Lucky Irabor (rtd); former Corps Marshal of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Boboye Oyeyemi; chairman of the board of trustees, IBB International Golf and Country Club, General I.M. Haruna; and other amateur golfers teed off Captain Banjo Obaleye’s Inaugural Tournament in Abuja.
400 players from around the country and abroad competed in the first competition on the 18-hole golf course of the elite IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja to mark Banjo Obaleye’s tenure as Club Captain.
General I.M. Haruna (rtd) told the media after teeing off that the event was in keeping with tradition and signalled Captain Banjo Obaleye on the saddle as the captain of an international golf club.
He stated that the IBB International Golf and Country Club management and members relied on his knowledge to advance the club.
“We chose him to lead the club this year, and this is his debut competition to put him on the saddle as captain of an international golf club with all its attachments—ladies section, tennis section, etc.
“He is a highly experienced golfer, extremely inventive and we are expecting a lot from him to lead the club properly and to a new height,” said the Club BoT chairman.
General Lucky Irabor (rtd), the former CDS, said the event provided a chance for golfers to network and make friends.
“Captain Banjo Obaleye is a buddy and pushed me to join this fantastic club. I have a personal love for our relationship.
“For what is occurring now, Captain Obaleye’s inaugural event is a treasured occasion for us as golfers and players since it unites golfers from throughout the nation and beyond to network and build friends. I’m happy to participate in the competition.
“It’s a two-day, two-round 72-hole competition with a cut after the first day.
But if you need to play better to get through to the second day, you are cut off the pitch, which reduces the pitch on the second day.
“That is very usual in this format and makes it more difficult since everyone on the first day needs to be on top of their game.
“Conditions at the present indicate that the scores may be somewhat higher than typical because of the rains; hence, there is going to be true test of skill,” Irabor said.
