The general elections in Zimbabwe are set on August 23. Before the elections, the European Union (EU) announced that it would be the first to deploy an observation team to the nation in southern Africa.
Prior to the elections, Jobst von Kirchmann, the EU ambassador to Zimbabwe, and Amon Murwira, the country’s acting minister of foreign affairs and international trade, signed a memorandum of understanding on Friday.
44 short-term observers will be there before election day, and 46 long-term observers will follow the EU team at the end of July.
The 80-year-old President Emmerson Mnangagwa of the governing ZANU-PF party is running for his last five-year term. Nelson Chamisa, the leader of the opposition, who he barely defeated in a contested election in 2018, is anticipated to provide a serious challenge to him.
On October 2, there will be a runoff if no presidential contender receives a clear majority in the first round.
