After Niger’s coup d’état, Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) advised the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) against military intervention against the military junta.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alh. Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar leads JNI, whose Secretary General, Prof. Khalid Abubakar Aliyu, made a statement.

On Saturday, he claimed to represent Nigeria’s Muslim Ummah.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) granted Niger’s military junta seven days to reinstate President Mohamed Bazoum after the coup.

ECOWAS has also sanctioned Niger, blocking its assets and restricting financial transactions. It threatened forcefully to reinstall Bazoum.

However, demonstrations in Niger have warned ECOWAS, notably its Chairman, Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, not to meddle in their affairs.

Burkina Faso and Mali’s military administrations have warned that military involvement against Niger’s coup leaders would constitute a “declaration of war” against them.

JNI supports Niger’s coup leaders’ talks to settle the situation.

It cautioned against military action in the Niger Republic since numerous Nigerian states border it.

“We highlight the significance of sustaining democratic ideals and the rule of law to encouraging stability, growth, and steady progress within countries, which are without question pillars for effective governance,” it stated.

The JNI commends the Nigerian government’s efforts to resolve the Niger Republic problem, notably the start of a negotiation process.

This failed effort shows Nigeria’s commitment to peaceful settlements. We recognize that discussion might avert future violence and instability in the Sahel Area, currently plagued by political and security issues.

We advise against military intervention to restore democracy. The complex environment of northern Nigeria and Niger requires a more cautious and considered approach.

Military action might affect peace and stability in both countries since numerous Nigerian states border the Niger Republic.

JNI urged parties to prioritize diplomatic and political rapprochement and collaborative crisis response.

Conversation, collaboration, and negotiation are the best ways to achieve enduring peace and stability.

The international community, especially ECOWAS, must continue peaceful diplomatic negotiations to find a solution.

“In these difficult times, we ask all devout believers to pray to Allah, seeking His benevolent intervention to guide leaders towards good choices and a peaceful settlement. Let’s pray for Nigeria and the Niger Republic’s peace, human rights, and well-being.

Finally, the JNI pledges to promote unity, understanding, and collaboration among Muslims and communities. “We stand together against injustice, oppression, and violence, appealing for peace and harmony,” it continued.
