Prior to June 12, 2023, Democracy Day, former vice president Atiku Abubakar claimed that Nigeria’s democracy was still enslaved.

The ruling class must quit influencing the results of elections, according to a statement issued on Sunday by Atiku, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) presidential candidate for the election on February 25, 2023.

According to Atiku, June 12 is a day to reflect on Nigeria’s progress towards becoming a democratic society.

Democracy, according to Atiku, “leaves the people submissive to tendencies of dictatorship without a comparable commitment to the ideals of justice and loyalty to the rule of play by stakeholders in the procedures of conducting elections.”

“Our democracy must constantly move away from the current pattern where the ruling elite predetermines the results of elections if it is to be fully fledged,”

“Democratization and the practise of democracy are ongoing works in progress. While the restoration of civil rule in Nigeria is what we are celebrating today, the goal of all democratic participants is to make our democracy self-sustaining and unaffected by anti-democratic forces.

He said, “What we choose to do or not do tonight will have a significant impact on the challenge before us and the future of our democracy.”

“While I congratulate Nigerians on this day and the restoration of civil rule, I also draw their attention to the fact that Nigeria’s democracy is still captive and would require our combined efforts to free it.”
