Hon. Joe Ghartey, an NPP presidential contender, has encouraged party delegates to choose a seasoned and credible candidate for the 2024 general elections.
He said the party needed a devoted and compassionate leader. In an interview with Sir John on Fox morning drive on Tuesday as part of his visit to the Ashanti Region, covered by The Chronicle, the former Minister of Railways Development asked delegates to vote for him to shatter the 8-year myth.
Joe Ghartey said he had been a member of the NPP since its founding in 1992 and had promoted its ideas and advocated for the party to advance the country.
To build Ghana, he prioritised railway transport. He stressed that “we must always endeavour to go forward and not backwards” as a nation.
Joe Ghartey told the media that his Justice for All programme had decongested Ghanaian jails.
He said the Justice for All programme had decreased Ghanaian prison remands to 9% from 33%.
“Justice for All” brought the court into jails to release unjustly imprisoned people. Joe Ghartey informed Angel FM listeners that 9% of detainees are remand prisoners.
After visiting the overcrowded Kumasi Central Prison and meeting a young woman who had been imprisoned under challenging circumstances, he decided to start such a life-changing initiative.
He stated, “Other African countries, including Kenya have implemented the initiative to lower the number of remand detainees in their prisons.”
The legislator said these activities made him glad because they were about serving the people wherever he was.
The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) will hold its presidential primary on November 4, 2023, to choose a candidate for the 2024 general elections.
Former Attorney General and Minister for Justice Joe Ghartey will face former Agric Minister Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, Mr Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, Former Trade Minister Mr Boakye Agyako, former Energy Minister Mr Kennedy Agyapong, Mr Kwabena Agyapong, former General Secretary of the party, Mr Francis Addai-Nimoh, Dr Kofi Konadu Apraku, and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who have all declared their intention to run in the upcoming presidential.
