Burna Boy, a Grammy-winning artist from Nigeria, has finally spoken out about being called a “new cat” in the music business.
The recent remarks by award-winning musician and colleague Davido, whose debut studio album L.I.F.E. was published as far back as 2013, caused a commotion. Burna Boy has long been the underdog in the Nigerian music industry.
Remember that Davido spoke candidly about the first two Nigerian musicians that popularized the afrobeat genre in an interview with Brut Afrique. identifying Wizkid and himself as the movement’s founders, “Afrobeats to the World.” He continued by saying that “new kitties” like Burna Boy, Rema, Asake, and many more have elevated the wave.
On social media, the remark sparked a discussion on whether Burna could be considered a “new cat.” Burna Boy’s sister, Nissi, even responded to Davido’s remark, while the older brother remained mute.
The Afro-fusion singer, who recently made history by selling out the 41,000-seat Citi Field stadium in New York and becoming the first African musician to headline a stadium event in the U.K., also went out to sell out the 60,000-seat London Stadium.
Burna Boy first mentioned the “new cat” discussion in an interview with Ebro Darden to preview the live performance, which is currently available to Apple Music subscribers in more than 165 countries.
According to Burna, having a reputation as a beginner in the field offers him more time to work and longevity.
