Peoples Democratic Party Sweeps Oyo Local Government Elections

In the aftermath of the council poll held on April 27, the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) unveiled the results on Sunday, revealing a landslide victory for candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) across 33 local government areas.

While the PDP celebrated its triumph, the African Action Congress (AAC) state chapter vehemently rejected the outcome, accusing both the state electoral body and the PDP of orchestrating what they termed “a show of shame” and “a monumental electoral heist.”

According to Kayode Babayomi, the State AAC Chair, the electoral process was marred by rampant irregularities, violence, and intimidation. Babayomi highlighted delays in distributing voting materials, the mobilization of PDP thugs to intimidate voters, and instances of security operatives exerting undue influence.

The statement further condemned the arrest and detention of Babayomi by the police while monitoring the council election. Babayomi lamented the disruption of their candidates’ wards by PDP thugs and the alleged complicity of the OYSIEC chairman, Isiaka Olagunje, in undermining the integrity of the electoral process.

The AAC unequivocally rejected the purported election results, labelling them as a coordinated effort to subvert democracy. They demanded the immediate cancellation of the election and called for a new date to ensure a free, fair, and transparent electoral process.

Despite the AAC’s protestations, the PDP emerged victorious in numerous local government areas, including Saki East, Olorunsogo, Ogo Oluwa, Iseyin, Saki West, Ogbomoso South, Ibadan North West, and others.

The election results paint a picture of political upheaval in Oyo State, with allegations of electoral malpractice and the contentious battle for democratic legitimacy gripping the region. As stakeholders navigate the fallout from the contested elections, the integrity of the electoral process hangs in the balance, shaping the future of democracy in Oyo State.
