Barcelona is willing to sell If Frenkie de Jong doesn’t sign a reduced contract, Man United will target him

Barcelona is prepared to part ways with Frenkie de Jong this summer unless he agrees to a revised contract with reduced wages.

The prospect of a Manchester United transfer window without discussions about De Jong seems unlikely. Although a deal was agreed upon in the summer of 2022, the Dutch midfielder showed no inclination to leave Camp Nou.

Despite De Jong’s consistent expressions of loyalty to Barcelona, the club’s dire financial predicament has kept rumours of his potential departure alive.

Manchester United has encountered significant midfield challenges this season, with the decline of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen evident. Additionally, Sofyan Amrabat has yet to make an impact, and Mason Mount’s injury woes have hindered his contribution at Old Trafford.

Consequently, young talent Kobbie Mainoo has shouldered midfield responsibilities this campaign, but United is keen on reinforcing the area in the near future. If Erik ten Hag remains in charge, De Jong will undoubtedly be on their radar once again.

According to Spanish outlet AS, the possibility of De Jong being available for transfer this summer is plausible.

Injuries have plagued the Dutchman’s season, and uncertainty clouds his future at Barcelona, especially considering the club’s financial constraints.

De Jong’s escalating contract, which was signed near the end of Josep Maria Bartomeu’s presidency, presents a dilemma for Barcelona. With his current deal expiring in the summer of 2026, club officials see this as an opportune moment to offload him if he rejects revised terms.

While De Jong has expressed his desire to stay, Barcelona remains open to potential offers for the midfielder.

Furthermore, United’s financial situation could facilitate a move for De Jong, especially if they manage to offload high-wage earners like Casemiro and Varane. However, Bayern Munich’s interest in De Jong presents stiff competition, offering Champions League football and the prospect of immediate silverware.
